| What is an Au Pair? An Au Pair is a single person aged 17-27 without dependants, who comes to the United Kingdom to learn English and live as part of an English speaking family for a maximum two year period. An Au Pair receives pocket money with his/her own bedroom and all meals. |

Hours of Work An Au Pair works 25 hours per week, generally 5 hours per day, plus two or three evenings' babysitting with reasonable notice. An Au Pair plus works from 26-35 hours per week. Families may want to split working hours between the morning and afternoon. Split hours should never prevent the Au Pair from attending English Language classes. |
| Duties Duties include light housework, cleaning, washing up, helping at meal times, ironing, and helping with the children. The Au Pair may be asked to take the children to and from school and supervise them in the absence of the parents. Free Time All Au Pairs are entitled to two free days each week. This should usually be two 24-hour periods and only cancelled in an emergency. Social Life An Au Pair should ask her host if she may bring friends back to the house. She can not expect to bring friends home without permission. She should ask other Au Pairs from the English class for information about clubs etc. The host family may also be able to advise in this respect. English Lessons English Lessons should be available at local colleges or by private tutor. Pocket Money Au Pairs can expect to receive pocket money of £55 per week (as recommended by Home Office April 2004) Au Pairs Plus
can expect to receive between £60.00 and £80.00 per week |
